Surface Wheelies & Tail Presses
Surface wheelies and tail presses are balance tricks done on flat water. A wheelie means riding on just the tail of the board with the nose lifted. A tail press is similar but with more style and control. These build the board control needed for advanced obstacle tricks, especially press tricks on boxes and rails.
The trick to a clean press is letting the cable keep you upright. If you try to balance on the tail purely with your legs, you'll wobble. Instead, hold a slight heelside edge so the line is pulling against you, then bend the back knee and lift the front foot. The tension stabilises the whole thing.
On a tail press you can go further: fully extend the back leg, pull the front foot up toward your chest, and keep the handle low at your hip. It looks like you're sitting on the tail. Hold it for a beat, then shift back to centred riding and carry on.
Key tips
- Shift your weight gradually to the back foot
- Keep the handle close to prevent being pulled off balance
- Start with short presses and extend the duration as you improve
- Practice in both regular and switch stances
- Use a mild heelside edge for line tension, don't ride flat
- If the nose sinks, you're leaning back with your shoulders. Lift with the front knee instead
- Film yourself, because presses look very different from the outside than they feel
