BS 360 nose roll

Skill: do a butter BS 360 Nose-Roll

Switch: Can be ridden switch

Prerequisites: Backside 360

A backside 360 nose roll is a full rotation buttered out on the snow, spun backside. You carve in on your toes, press gently into the nose, roll the board 180 degrees around it, then switch to your heel edge and ride the last half of the spin out in a heelside carve. It's the mirror of the FS 360 nose roll - toes in, heels out - and it's the one a lot of riders end up doing every single lap once it clicks.

The idea

Don't think of this as a press-and-pivot. Think of it as a backside 360 off a jump that happens to be on the ground. The upper body does exactly what it would do off a kicker - one committed backside rotation - and the nose press is just a gentle nudge on the toe edge that lets the board pivot around instead of leaving the snow.

Before you try it

You want carving and switch carving to be comfortable, plus a solid nose press and backside 180 noseroll. A clean backside 360 off a jump helps a lot, because the upper body motion is the same one you'll borrow.

How to do it

Step 1 - learn the motion with no butter. Ride a slight toe-side carve, do a backside 360 pivot on the flat base, switch onto your heel edge and ride away in a heelside carve. No nose press at all. This is the whole trick minus the trick, and it teaches the single edge switch that keeps you safe.

Step 2 - set up on your toes. Come in on a toeside carve with a bit of speed. Weight centered, chest open, nothing forced yet.

Step 3 - start the rotation, then feed the nose. Begin the backside upper body rotation like you're spinning a 3 off a jump - head and shoulders leading, committed. While that's happening, put just a little pressure into the nose on the toe edge and let the board pivot around it. Gentle. This is a nudge, not a full press.

Step 4 - switch at 180. At the halfway point, roll onto your heel edge and let that edge drive the rest of the rotation. Don't go back to your toes.

Step 5 - absorb the landing. This one tends to come down hard on the heels. Stay soft in the knees and take the impact gently, then keep carving out on the heel edge.

Common mistakes

  • Carve, press, rotate as three separate beats. It stalls and looks stiff. Start the rotation first and let the nose pressure live inside it.
  • Too much nose pressure. You only need a little on the toe edge. Heavy pressing kills the rotation and makes the board hook.
  • Switching back to the toe edge after 180. That extra edge change is where you catch an edge and where over-rotation comes from. Commit to the heel edge and stay there.
