Surface BS180

Surface BS180

Source: WakeboomerTV · channel

The backside 180 is a surface spin where you rotate with your back turning toward the cable. This feels different from the frontside version because the handle pass happens in front of your body rather than behind. Practice power slide 180s first as a stepping stone.

A lot of riders find the BS180 actually easier than the FS180 once they get past the initial blind spot. You can see the handle for most of the rotation, and the line stays in a more natural position across your body. The hard part is the first quarter of the spin, where you're turning your back on the cable and it feels like you're about to get yanked over backwards.

Key tips

  • Initiate by turning your head and shoulders backside
  • The handle pass is in front of you. Reach across your body
  • Keep the rotation smooth and continuous
  • Practice from both regular and switch stances
  • Keep the handle low through the pass. High handles throw your balance
  • Spot the water early in the second half to plant a clean switch landing
