Backside 360

Skill: Do a backside 360

The heelside backside 360 is the other way around the kicker 360, and it's worth knowing up front that it is a completely different trick — not a bigger kicker BS180. Having your BS180 dialled barely helps here. What actually helps is a clean heelside jump off the kicker, plus a surface 360 or a backside 360 across a box to get the handle pass into your hands.

Going up the ramp, pull yourself forward with your front hand by driving the handle down to your hip, then keep pulling it around to your lower back. At the same time, look over your rear shoulder to start the rotation. Your rear hand reaches around to your lower back and takes the handle early — the earlier that pass happens, the smoother the rest of the spin is. From there you don't do anything. Stay flat, keep looking over that rear shoulder, and let yourself unwind.

Once you've come all the way around, look down and spot the water. The handle needs to be close to your front hip — either hand is fine. Front hand lands a little easier but costs you a second handle pass. Bend your knees and ride away.

Key tips

  • Don't treat this as a big BS180 — it's a different trick. A surface BS360 or a box BS360 is much better prep
  • Gentle heelside edge in, one hand or two, and flatten off completely before the ramp
  • If you ride in with both hands, drop the rear hand as you get onto the kicker
  • Ride up the kicker perfectly flat. Riding up on edge is what sends you sideways
  • Front hand pulls the handle to your hip, then to your lower back — that pull is what starts the spin
  • Head over the rear shoulder initiates the rotation. Pass the handle early, not at the peak
  • After the pass, do nothing. Stay flat and let the rotation unwind on its own
  • Spot the water after the full rotation, handle close to your front hip, knees bent
