- Switch
Riding with your non-dominant foot forward instead of your natural stance - the opposite of your normal riding position.
- Heelside / Toeside
The two edges of your wakeboard. Heelside is the edge under your heels - leaning back against the pull of the cable digs it in. Toeside is the edge under your toes, engaged by leaning your chest over the board. Edge control decides your line, your speed into features, and the pop you get off the water.
- Frontside / Backside (FS / BS)
Describes the direction of a spin or slide, usually abbreviated FS and BS (as in FS 180, BS 360). Frontside means your chest opens first in the direction of the rotation or toward the obstacle; backside means your back leads. Knowing your FS from your BS matters because the two directions feel completely different on takeoff, in the air and on landing.
- Kicker
A ramp-shaped obstacle at a cable park that launches you into the air. Kickers come in different sizes and are the main way to learn jumps, grabs and spins with a predictable takeoff, as opposed to hitting the wake behind a boat.
- Ollie
A jump off flat water with no ramp, done by loading pressure on the tail and popping the board up out of the water. It's the wakeboard version of the skateboard ollie and the foundation for flat-water tricks like ollie 180s.
