Chairlifts are how you get up the mountain. You'll ride them to access different runs across the resort, whether on piste or in the park.

    How to do it

As you approach the lift line, scan your pass. Take your pole straps off and hold both poles in one hand, freeing up your other hand.

When the gate opens, shuffle forward quickly to the red line, keeping your skis straight and parallel. Don't sit down; let the chair come to you. As it scoops you up, use your free hand to steady yourself. Once seated, pull the safety bar down and put your feet on the footrests.

As you near the top, take your feet off the footrest and push the safety bar up. Shuffle forward slightly if needed, then use your free hand to push off the chair as your skis touch the snow.

Stand up, lean forward, and slide away from the chairlift, keeping your skis parallel. Look ahead and ski clear of the unloading area.

    Common mistakes

    • Not moving far enough forward: If you don't get to the red line, you'll try to sit on the chair instead of letting it scoop you, which can be awkward or cause you to miss it.
    • Stepping on other people's skis: Keep your skis straight and parallel as you shuffle forward to avoid tripping yourself or others.
    • Not leaning forward enough when getting off: If you stand too upright, you'll be off-balance. Push forward with your hand and lean into the dismount.
    • Opening a snowplow too early when getting off: Keep your skis parallel as you slide away to avoid catching edges or colliding with others.
