Mexican Roll

Skill: land a Mexican roll off the kicker

The Mexican roll is a heelside front roll off the kicker.

Approach with a strong, committed heelside edge into the kicker, both hands on the handle. As you reach the bottom of the ramp, release the back hand, keeping the front elbow locked and arm straight out in front of you. Use your legs to pop at the top of the kicker, then throw the flip by looking hard under your armpit - that look is what starts the rotation. Keep the front arm locked the whole way round; if you pull on the handle, you'll get pulled in toward the rope and create slack, making the landing hard to find.

Throwing the flip too far over your toes is the most common mistake. Because your edge takes you further from the running wires on the way to the kicker, the handle naturally pulls back in toward the cable - if you then rotate straight over your toes, you're rotating into the rope, not away from it, and you'll take a back edge on the way down. Keep the rotation focused under the armpit rather than over the toes to avoid this. Come around, spot the water over your toeside edge, and land independently without relying on the handle to pull you round.

Key tips

  • Two hands on the handle for a strong heelside edge into the kicker
  • Drop the back hand at the base of the kicker, right before you go up
  • Keep the front elbow locked and arm straight out - don't let it bend or pull
  • Pop with the legs at the top of the kicker, then throw by looking under your armpit
  • Rotate under the armpit, not over the toes, or you'll rotate into the rope
  • If you keep taking a back edge on landing, you're throwing it too far over your toes
