Layback

Skill: do a layback

Prerequisites: Tail Press Tripod

The layback is one of snowboarding's most expressive ground tricks - you point your board straight, drop your hips and drag your back hand through the snow, and ride out grinning. There's no technical secret to it; it's pure commitment and feel, which is exactly why it's so fun.

Before you try it

Two tricks will set you up well. Tail presses teach you how to balance on the back of your board and flex it, which is the same weight distribution you need here. Tripods get you comfortable putting your hands in the snow and using your core to pull yourself back upright.

Before hitting the slope, practice the motion at home or on flat ground first. Strap in, point straight, and try to sink your hips down toward the snow while keeping your weight centered over the tail. This stretches out your hips and legs and builds muscle memory for how the layback should feel.

How to do it

Point your board straight downhill - no edge, no turning. Start sinking your hips toward the snow and use your arms to balance, keeping your head facing downhill. Your weight should stay centered over the back of the board; if it drifts left or right, the board will start to turn and you'll lose it.

You can't control your speed during the layback, so pick your spot carefully: a smooth, consistent slope you're comfortable with, no other riders cutting across below you. Softer snow helps a lot - it cushions the layback and makes sliding in and out much smoother. Avoid bumpy or uneven terrain; that's the main reason laybacks go wrong.

Once your hips are on (or near) the snow and your hand is dragging, hold the position as long as you like, then use your core to pull yourself back up and recenter over your board.

Key tips

  • Practice sinking into the position at a standstill before adding speed
  • Keep your weight centered over the tail - any drift sideways will turn the board
  • Pick a smooth, consistent slope; bumps are the main cause of falls
  • Softer snow is your friend - it's more forgiving on the way down and on the way out
  • Flexible gear matters: stiff boots, bindings, or a stiff board will fight you - loosen up if needed
  • Once it clicks, make it yours - add your own style and have fun with it
