## What this trick is

A Smith grind is similar to a 5-0 as only the back truck is in contact with the ledge/coping but rather than the front wheels being in the air, they dip down on the heel-side of the ledge at an angle.

## Before you try it

Be used to 5050 and 5-0 grinds on a ledge.

Wax the whole ledge, particularly the top platform where the back toe-side wheel is in contact.

## How to do it

1. **The setup** – Place your back foot on the tail and your front foot just behind the front bolts so you can pop and guide the board into position.

2. **The trick** – Pop an ollie and turn your board into the ledge, aiming to lock your back truck onto the top edge while your front truck hangs over the heel-side. Turn your shoulders slightly into the grind and keep your weight centered over the back truck, trying not to hang too much weight on the wheel itself. Stay low, keep your eyes looking ahead along the ledge, and let the board slide rather than forcing it.

3. **The landing** – As you approach the end of the ledge, gently lift and guide the board out, turning your shoulders and hips back into your normal riding stance. Keep your knees bent and look toward your rollout path rather than down at your feet. Absorb the landing with both feet over the bolts and roll away smoothly.

## Common mistakes

- **Front wheelbite** - Don't let the front toe-side wheel touch the ledge. Try to keep it away to avoid snagging.

- **Weight distribution** - Try not to keep too much weight up ontop of the ledge, try to lean out slightly to unweight the wheel on the ledge and help it to slide on the top surface as well as roll
